When fall rolls around, we all become a little bit basic. Or to put it more eloquently, many fall flavors and activities deserve the degree of hype behind them that most of us are willing to admit we love the onslaught of pumpkin baked goods and leaf-themed decor, just like everyone else.
If you’ve listened to Kylie Kelce’s podcast Not Gonna Lie before, you’ve seen how relatable the media personality and host is — that’s a big part of her appeal. Even though she’s part of what could be the most famous family in the U.S. right now, Kylie Kelce still makes listeners feel like she’s one of them. And she recently revealed her favorite parts of fall to prove it.
On the latest episode of Not Gonna Lie, the mother of four shared that, while she isn’t a fan of pumpkin spice flavors, she is all in on apples during autumn, and one of her family’s favorite activities this time of year is apple picking.
Kelce mentions that “I love apple picking. I love it. I’m going to do it,” but she has developed a strategy to ensure all her kids are happy during the apple-picking experience. According to the podcast host, “We’ve leveled up to a point that we now bring a wagon for anyone who maybe isn’t feeling into it.
“We have four children, and even if you have one child, you know that you could do an activity, and they are so into it. And the next time you go to do the activity, they’re not into it. But when you’ve driven forty-five minutes to an hour to go to this apple orchard, your ass is picking apples, whether they’re throwing a temper tantrum or not. So we’ve leveled up.”
Kelce and her family visit Weaver’s Orchard every year, and since they live in Pennsylvania — the state with the fourth-largest apple crop in the United States — it’s quite easy to find a place to gather the seasonal fruit. But outside of Pennsylvania, there’s a long list of states that offer apple-picking opportunities in at least some areas.
California, New York, Michigan, Washington, Oregon, and Virginia all have substantial apple crops, and northeastern states, including Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, are known for their thriving apple-picking cultures in the fall. You can even go apple picking in some parts of northern Georgia.
The podcast host is known for sharing hot takes on her show, and she pairs her enthusiasm for apple picking with a discussion of two lighthearted yet controversial opinions. She emphasizes that “I love an apple cider donut,” while also saying that “I don’t need apple cider. I don’t need it. I don’t want it straight-up. I do want it in doughnut form.” (Personally, I’ll take both.)
If you’re looking for other ways to channel your inner Kylie Kelce this fall, she shares two more hot takes on seasonal desserts. The host explains that “I like an apple Dutch crumb over a traditional apple pie. It’s way better,” and she strongly cautions that no one should serve her a dessert à la mode, asking, “Why are you going to get a scoop of warm apple crisp and then put a cold scoop of ice cream on top?”
I will probably continue serving my warm desserts with cold scoops of ice cream, but I’ll also be taking a page from Kelce’s book and enjoying a crumble-topped Dutch apple pie this year, instead of the more traditional crust-covered version.
