The newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet has officially made its first call in Puerto Rico.
The Disney Destiny arrived in San Juan this week on its inaugural visit to the island, marking the beginning of a series of scheduled calls expected to bring more than $1.6 million in economic activity to Puerto Rico through July of next year.
According to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the ship is scheduled to make seven transit calls in San Juan between June and July, with spending expected to benefit local businesses, tour operators, transportation providers and other tourism-related sectors.
The arrival is another boost for San Juan’s cruise business, which has continued to expand as more cruise lines deploy newer ships throughout the Caribbean. Puerto Rico remains one of the region’s busiest cruise ports, serving both as a homeport and as a popular transit destination for ships sailing Eastern and Southern Caribbean itineraries.
A Growing Presence for Disney
The Disney Destiny is the newest addition to Disney Cruise Line’s Wish Class, a series of ships designed around immersive Disney storytelling, family entertainment and expanded dining and recreation offerings.
The vessel entered service last year and carries approximately 3,800 passengers along with 1,500 crew members.
Homeported in Fort Lauderdale, the ship is currently operating eight-night Caribbean cruises. On this sailing, San Juan follows a stop at Disney’s Lighthouse Point destination in The Bahamas before the ship continues to St. Maarten and then returns to South Florida.
For passengers spending the day in Puerto Rico, the visit offers an opportunity to explore one of the Caribbean’s most walkable cruise ports. Old San Juan’s blue cobblestone streets, colorful Spanish colonial architecture, historic forts, restaurants and shopping districts are all within easy reach of the cruise piers, making the city one of the region’s most popular transit stops.
A Record Cruise Year
Puerto Rico officials said the inaugural Disney Destiny call also comes as the island wraps up a record year for its cruise sector.
Governor Jenniffer González Colón said tourism continues to play an important role in Puerto Rico’s economic development strategy, with expanded Disney Cruise Line operations creating new opportunities for local businesses while reinforcing the island’s standing as one of the Caribbean’s leading cruise destinations.
Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel called the inaugural visit an important milestone for the island’s cruise industry, saying Disney’s expanded presence helps diversify tourism offerings while increasing the sector’s contribution to the local economy.
The Experience Onboard
Like its sister ships, the Disney Destiny is built around family vacations, with Broadway-style productions, themed restaurants, character experiences, kids’ clubs, water attractions and adults-only spaces.
The ship has quickly become one of Disney Cruise Line’s flagship Caribbean vessels, bringing one of the cruise industry’s strongest family brands to ports across the region.
Its continuing calls to San Juan over the next year add another high-profile ship to Puerto Rico’s growing lineup of regular cruise visitors, further strengthening the island’s role as one of the Caribbean’s premier cruise destinations.
