One of the most anticipated luxury hotel debuts in the Mexican Caribbean has officially arrived, Caribbean Journal has learned.
The St. Regis Costa Mujeres Resort, Cancún has opened its doors, marking the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Marriott International executives, government officials, project partners and local leaders. The debut adds one of Marriott’s flagship luxury brands to Costa Mujeres, the rapidly growing resort destination just north of Cancún.
The opening is another milestone for both the destination and the St. Regis brand, which has been expanding its presence across the Caribbean with a series of new luxury resorts.
Officials from Mexico’s federal government and the state of Quintana Roo joined executives from Marriott International and ownership group AB Living Group for the ceremony, underscoring the importance of luxury tourism investment in one of the country’s fastest-growing travel markets.
Among those attending were Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, and Mara Lezama Espinosa, Governor of Quintana Roo, who highlighted the role of tourism development in supporting the region’s economy, employment and continued growth as an international destination.
A Major Addition to Costa Mujeres
The opening represents years of planning for AB Living Group, which developed the project as part of its long-term vision for Costa Mujeres.
“This project represents the realization of a vision that began years ago with the belief that Costa Mujeres could become one of the world’s most exclusive and sophisticated destinations,” said Alfredo Bataller, CEO of AB Living Group, the developer of the project and the company behind a growing pipeline of new resorts coming to this corner of the Caribbean.
Costa Mujeres has become one of the Mexican Caribbean’s most active areas for new resort development over the last several years. Located just north of Cancún’s Hotel Zone, the destination combines broad Caribbean beaches with a growing collection of luxury resorts while remaining within easy reach of Cancún International Airport.
It’s a place more and more people refer to as the “New Cancun.”
The arrival of the St. Regis brand adds another high-profile luxury option to the destination’s expanding hospitality portfolio.
What You’ll Find at the Resort
The beachfront resort includes guestrooms and suites overlooking the Caribbean Sea, along with a collection of restaurants, bars, wellness facilities and oceanfront pools designed around the St. Regis brand’s signature approach to luxury hospitality.
Guests can also expect many of the traditions associated with the St. Regis name, including the brand’s renowned butler service and its signature Sabrage ritual, in which a bottle of Champagne is opened with a saber to mark the transition from day to evening.
That ceremony became one of the defining moments of the official opening celebration, symbolizing not only the close of the day’s festivities but also the beginning of the resort’s first season welcoming visitors.
Following the ribbon-cutting, invited guests toured the property, including its accommodations, culinary concepts and public spaces overlooking the Caribbean.
General Manager Idu Ribeiro said the opening marks an important moment for both the resort and the destination.
“Today, we celebrate much more than the opening of a hotel—we celebrate the beginning of a new chapter for Costa Mujeres,” Ribeiro said.
St. Regis Continues Caribbean Growth
The Costa Mujeres opening is part of a broader expansion for the St. Regis brand throughout the Caribbean.
Last year, Marriott opened The St. Regis Aruba Resort on Palm Beach, bringing the luxury flag to one of the region’s most popular destinations. The company also debuted The St. Regis Cap Cana Resort in the Dominican Republic, expanding its presence in another of the Caribbean’s leading luxury markets.
Additional growth is already on the horizon. Marriott has announced plans for The St. Regis Papagayo Resort in Costa Rica, continuing the brand’s expansion across the wider Caribbean Basin.
The recent openings reflect Marriott’s continued investment in ultra-luxury resorts throughout the region, particularly in destinations where demand for high-end beachfront accommodations continues to grow.
Another Luxury Milestone for Marriott
For Marriott International, the opening strengthens one of its most prestigious luxury brands in Mexico while adding another flagship resort to its Caribbean portfolio.
For Costa Mujeres, it represents another step in the destination’s emergence as one of the Mexican Caribbean’s leading luxury resort markets, joining a collection of internationally recognized hotel brands that have opened along its beaches over the past several years.
With the ribbon officially cut and its opening celebrations complete, The St. Regis Costa Mujeres Resort, Cancún is now welcoming its first guests, adding another significant new luxury resort to the Caribbean just as the destination prepares for another busy travel season.
Prices at the New St. Regis
I found rates of about $582 per night, which is pretty good for a St. Regis wherever you’re staying in the world. That gets you a one-king mangrove-view room. If you want a room with a private pool, the price goes up to about $778 per night, according to Marriott’s website.
