As wellness travel evolves beyond a la carta spa treatments and activities, one of the hottest trends is the advent of integrated wellness stay. These personalized, multi-day itineraries weave movement, mindfulness, nutrition, recovery, sleep optimization and culturally immersive experiences into a cohesive guest journey.
For the hotel, these journeys can mean growth in LOS, TRevPAR, CSAT, return guest rate (RGR) and a host of other healthy metrics. But above all the business goals, it’s always about the health of the guest. The hotels that have stood up integrated wellness stays are actually helping guests to realize true gains in health, vitality and wellbeing.
This brings us how I connected with John Allanson, General Manager of OUTRIGGER Maldives Maafushivaru Resort, where this transition toward purposeful wellness travel has become a major strategic focus. With 81 villas set amongst a host of Maldivian resorts offering some of the best hospitality in the world, the property has continued to distinguish itself by leaning into a more intimate and highly personalized expression where wellness is designed to unfold systemically across every space rather than remain confined to a spa menu.

And under Allanson’s leadership, OUTRIGGER Maldives has expanded the wellness offerings centered around Navasana Spa to include rituals based on the pillars of movement, mindfulness and tactile activation. This includes aerial yoga, bungee fit, rebound training, sound healing and full moon meditation, in addition to the debut of The Alchemy Bar with hands-on workshops such as coconut oil cooking, herbal poultice making and organic soap creation (wherein tactile activities like this are now being researched for their efficacy in cognitive longevity and helping prevent various types of dementia).
Bringing these new experiences together is the resort’s launch of two integrated wellness stays: their holistic fitness package and their healing retreat package. These are available in three-, five- and seven-night formats so that they can be booked flexibly yet still offer the structure that will elicit the desired health and wellbeing outcomes.
It’s amazing to see this type of property evolution, so let’s hear what Allanson has to say about what makes these wellness programs truly sing!
To start, give us an overview of your time at the helm of Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru.
Having had the privilege of being part of OUTRIGGER at our first property, Konotta Resort, and being involved throughout the process of OUTRIGGER’s purchase of Maafushivaru, it was clear that the resort’s fabric was already outstanding. What it needed was a distinct personality.
The senior team and I therefore set out to build our Maafushivaru ‘Ohana’, where guests are at the center of everything we do. Doing the right thing at the right time for the right reason sits at our core, with every experience shaped by appreciation and a clear understanding of what each guest is seeking from their time with us.
From this, our USP was born: “THE GUEST!” While the physical elements of a resort can be similar across the Maldives, we believe every guest’s experience should be entirely their own, so we place great value on personalizing every interaction. This begins with something simple but impactful, moving away from a traditional hotel reception model to a personal butler service. This change created a meaningful connection with every guest and has contributed to our recognition as ‘Best in class’ within OUTRIGGER.
The Maldives is a small place where word travels quickly and our reputation as a place to both work and stay, reflected in our occupancy levels, is well established. As we continue this journey, our outreach to local islands within our atoll, as well as to schools, remains key to bringing the next generation into the hospitality industry and into the OUTRIGGER way and our ‘Ohana’.

The Maldives are known for their exceptional hospitality, meaning the competition is fierce! What key features or experiences differentiate Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru from other Maldivian properties?
The Maldives is a highly competitive destination, with many beautiful resorts. For us, the difference is in how the experience actually unfolds once guests are here. At Maafushivaru, it starts with scale. With just 81 villas, the island naturally feels quieter and more personal, which allows guests to slow down and settle into a more relaxed rhythm.
From there, we’ve been very deliberate about building the experience around wellness in a way that feels easy and intuitive. It’s not something guests have to seek out, it’s part of the flow of the stay, whether that’s movement and mindfulness, a structured wellness journey, or something more hands-on like The Alchemy Bar.
There’s also a real connection to the environment. Guests can spend time on the reef, learn more about it, and even take part in conservation efforts, adding a deeper level of meaning to the stay. In the end, it’s not about doing more than everyone else, it’s about doing things in a way that feels natural, personal and genuinely connected to the island.
The focus for today, a huge growth area in leisure travel is wellness-primary or purposeful wellness-led resort stays. Can you give us an overview of what the new offerings look like at Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru for this segment?
For 2026, we have expanded our wellness programming to meet the growing demand for immersive, purposeful travel. Navasana Spa now serves as a central wellness hub, offering a curated mix of fitness and mindfulness practices. These include aerial yoga, sunrise yoga, bungee fit, rebound training and TRX, alongside chakra healing, sound healing and full moon meditation in oceanfront settings. Wellness is also reflected in the culinary experience, with menus that highlight fresh tropical fruits and island-sourced ingredients, designed to support a range of dietary preferences and wellness goals.
Another wellness trend for 2026 is ‘presence’ or the intentional act of slowing down. How does Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru lean into this trend? How does the combination of the natural setting and the resort’s programming lend itself to a more restorative stay?
The idea of slowing down is built into both the setting and the programming. The island’s natural environment, from the lagoon to the surrounding reef, encourages a slower pace, while the wellness offering reinforces that through experiences like sunrise yoga, meditation and sound healing. We have also created dedicated spaces with hammocks, mats and sound bowls that invite guests to pause and reflect, allowing them to engage with the environment in a more mindful and unstructured way.
A shining star for resort wellness is the advent of ‘integrated wellness stays’ or ‘personalized wellness journeys’ which include a range of experiences over multiple nights to elicit tangible and lasting wellbeing uplifts.
We have introduced two multi-night wellness programs that allow guests to take a more structured and personalized approach to their stay. The Holistic Fitness Package focuses on movement, combining personalized fitness sessions with Pilates-based exercises and flexibility training tailored to individual goals. The Healing Retreat Package begins with a wellness consultation and screening, then focuses on relaxation and emotional balance through daily yoga, therapeutic sound healing and targeted treatments. Both programs are available in three, five or seven-night formats, giving guests flexibility in how deeply they want to engage.
Lastly for wellness, The Alchemy Bar is incredible because these experiences activate all five senses while firmly expressing a true sense of place. Start by telling us what your favorite experiences are that your team has launched here. Next, how do you make guests aware of these experiences while also educating them about their wellbeing benefits?
The Alchemy Bar adds a hands-on, sensory dimension to the wellness experience. Guests can take part in workshops such as coconut oil cooking, herbal poultice making, candle crafting and organic soap creation. These experiences are designed to be interactive and memorable, allowing guests to engage directly in self-care rituals. Guests can also explore herbal teas, bath and sleep kits and aromatic candles, extending these wellness practices beyond their time at the resort.
The Maldives has one of the most diverse guest originations of any nation. How have you tailored the service to cater to guests from so many different cultural backgrounds?
The Maldives naturally attracts a highly international guest mix, and our approach is to create a service style that feels both intuitive and adaptable while remaining consistent with our brand. At OUTRIGGER Maldives Maafushivaru, that starts with personalization. Whether through wellness journeys, dining preferences or daily programming, we offer flexibility so guests can shape their experience in a way that feels comfortable and relevant to them.
Wellness has also become a unifying thread. Practices like yoga, mindfulness and sound healing translate across cultures, allowing us to create shared experiences that resonate with a global audience while still feeling personal.
With many flights to the Maldives arriving from Doha or Dubai, we would be remiss if we didn’t touch on how your team has responded to the war in the Middle East. How did you guide the property through this unpredictable event? What accommodations did you make for guests to give them sureties and demonstrate true hospitality amidst any uncertainties?
In moments of global uncertainty, our focus remains on providing clarity, reassurance and a consistent level of care for every guest. At the property level, that means maintaining open communication, offering flexibility where needed and ensuring guests feel supported throughout their stay. The nature of the resort itself, with its private island setting and emphasis on wellness and slowing down, also provides a sense of calm and stability during times that may feel uncertain.
As a brand, OUTRIGGER is grounded in caring for the guest, the host and the place, and that philosophy becomes even more important in these situations. It guides how we respond, ensuring that hospitality remains thoughtful, steady and centered on guest wellbeing.
Perhaps no nation is more affected by climate change than the Maldives. What initiatives have you undertaken to make your property more resilient in the face of extreme weather events?
The Maldives is one of the most climate-sensitive destinations in the world, so sustainability is embedded in the guest experience. At OUTRIGGER Maldives Maafushivaru, this comes to life through marine conservation led by our resident marine biologist. Guests can take part in hands-on coral restoration, guided snorkeling experiences and educational sessions that build awareness of ocean health.
These efforts are part of OUTRIGGER’s global OZONE initiative, focused on coral reef preservation, marine protection and environmental education. The goal is to give guests a direct connection to the environment, so they leave with a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting places like the Maldives.
