My Mother-in-Law’s Best Gift Was This Cast Iron Cookware Set

I would like to claim my mother-in-law makes gifting look effortless, but that wouldn’t be giving her enough credit. Whether for holiday host gifts or birthday presents, she ensures her bows attach to something both thoughtful and useful for her loved ones. Three years ago, during my second Christmas with the family, I was left speechless after unwrapping a Lodge cast iron cookware set. I had cooked with cast iron almost my entire life, but hadn’t yet purchased pieces of my own, so her finding out it was the best gift she could give me meant the world.

As it happens, Lodge is an exceptionally renowned cookware brand that makes a lot of our favorite cast iron cookware and bakeware. From its tiniest cast iron skillets to its largest camp Dutch ovens, it’s trusted by celebrity chefs, our editors, and more to never break, work on any cooktop, and last beyond a lifetime. Plus, it’s surprisingly affordable. If I had to choose one set of cookware to keep in my kitchen forever, this would be it, and here’s why.

Lodge’s cast iron cookware set includes a 5-quart lidded Dutch oven, 8- and 10.25-inch skillets, and a 10.5-inch round griddle pan. Every piece is a year-round go-to of mine in its own right, with the 10.25-inch skillet being my most frequented tool. An indispensable kitchen companion, it handles high-heat cooking tasks very well, as shown in our cast iron skillet testing. Both Ina Garten and Rachel Ray would agree with me that it makes the best burgers indoors thanks to its unparalleled heat retention; though, I also use it for searing chicken and steak, reducing sauces, making pot pies, caramelizing onions, and countless other tasks. The smaller, 8-inch skillet is useful for nights when I’m cooking single servings of protein, and I often use it for individual focaccia pizzas, small cookie cakes, or deep-dish brownies. It even serves as a great side dish serving skillet, since it doesn’t take up too much space on a holiday tabletop.

The Dutch oven is one of my favorite items in my kitchen. Full disclosure: My mother-in-law actually gifted me the Lodge Chef Collection Double Dutch Oven, which includes a larger pot, offset handles, and a grill pan lid. I still adore my Dutch oven; however, the 5-quart Dutch oven in this set has its clear advantages. The topside handle is much more convenient to grab than a flush-locking set of helper handles. The lid is also handier for people who aren’t interested in a grill pan, especially since the self-basting spikes, which collect condensation and drip it back over your dish, mean you don’t have to painstakingly reach between grill ridges to clean out debris. Not to mention, the Dutch oven lid fits onto the 10.25-inch skillet for one-pan dinners and shallow frying. With 650°F-safe cast iron construction, the Dutch oven and lid are perfect for braising short ribs at 325°F, baking sourdough bread at 475°F, or crisping campfire bacon at over 500°F — never worry about warping, and always trust the heating will be even and consistent.

Food & Wine

For less liquidy or greasy applications, I pull out the griddle pan. The shallow walls give better access to spatulas when reaching in to flip foods like pancakes and eggs. On another note, grilled cheese sandwiches and patty melts get plenty of air flow even when I’m weighing them down on the griddle pan with my cast iron grill press. In a pinch, if my griddle pan is closer than my other tools, I even use it as a grill press itself over larger pans and as a lid over my cast iron skillets. Additionally, I like using it at times when I’m not employing a utensil at all, like when heating tortillas or toasting burger buns. I especially like how comfortable the handle is on this pan, since it’s nearly flush with the pan.

This cast iron cookware set can last a millennium if you take care of it correctly. Hand-washing and reseasoning heavy cast iron takes more time and effort than washing dishwasher-safe stainless steel sets or slick nonstick frying pans, but care becomes quicker and easier with continued use and layers of seasoning. Besides, the price is unbeatable. Bought separately, these cookware pieces would add up to $128, but the entire 5-piece set together is only $100 at Amazon. Competitor cast iron cookware and stainless steel cookware can cost over $100 per piece, with no guarantee of good performance. The Lodge cast iron set, on the other hand, has earned over 6,800 five-star ratings, not counting over 100,000 collective five-star testimonials from each individual piece. Trust me, it’s a bandwagon worth hopping on, so add it to your gift list this year, or buy a set for someone whose kitchen gear needs a refit for 2026.
