Two Norwegian Prima Class Ships to Homeport in Puerto Rico for Southern Caribbean Sailings

San Juan, Puerto Rico will become homeport to two of Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ships during the 2027–2028 winter season, marking the first time in the cruise line’s history that two Prima Class vessels will be based in the Caribbean at the same time.

Beginning in mid-Nov. 2027, both Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva will operate week-long Southern Caribbean itineraries from San Juan, expanding the island’s role as a major cruise hub while offering two distinct routing options for travelers. The deployments run through April 2028 and are expected to drive increased cruise traffic through Puerto Rico and multiple destinations across the eastern and southern Caribbean.

Norwegian Prima will operate Saturday turnarounds from Nov. 13, 2027 through April 22, 2028. Her seven-day itineraries include calls in Road Town in the British Virgin Islands, Philipsburg in St. Maarten, Bridgetown in Barbados, Castries in St. Lucia, Basseterre in St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands.

Complementing that schedule, Norwegian Viva will homeport in San Juan on Sundays from Nov. 14, 2027 through Jan. 23, 2028. Viva’s itineraries are designed to sail farther south, with seven-day voyages that include ports in Aruba and Curaçao, adding deeper Southern Caribbean coverage alongside Prima’s eastern route.

The dual-ship deployment underscores San Juan’s growing importance within the Caribbean cruise market, particularly as cruise lines continue to diversify itineraries beyond traditional eastern Caribbean loops. Homeporting operations bring additional economic impact to destinations, including pre- and post-cruise hotel stays, dining, transportation, and provisioning.

Both ships are part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Prima Class, which represents the company’s newest generation of vessels and has received industry recognition for design, onboard space, and guest experience. Basing two ships of the class in San Juan simultaneously signals long-term confidence in the port and the demand for Southern Caribbean itineraries departing from Puerto Rico.

The 2027–2028 season positions San Juan as one of the few Caribbean ports offering multiple week-long Southern Caribbean sailings on new-build ships, with itineraries that span both established and high-demand destinations across the region.
