This $14 Hack Keeps Sweet Potatoes Fresher for Longer

The holiday season is almost here, and with it comes some of my favorite dishes that involve one key ingredient: sweet potatoes. I’m a huge fan of sweet potato casserole (with marshmallows, of course), sweet potato pie, sweet potato pancakes, and so many other sweet potato recipes. During this time of year, the price tends to drop on this yummy produce as more get harvested, so I always grab several to keep on hand. The last thing I want is for them to go bad before I can cook all my favorite fall dishes. So, what is the best way to store these potatoes?

Sweet potatoes, like regular potatoes, including russet, fingerling, and Yukon gold, like to be stored together without any other produce (yes, they’re fussy like that). Potatoes should not be stored with produce that emits ethylene gas, including onions, tomatoes, and bananas. Plus, storing them in the refrigerator is a big no-no — they don’t like moisture. Thankfully, it’s not hard to store potatoes correctly and keep them fresh longer; simply keep them in a cool, dry place with ample air circulation. A great sweet potato storage solution is the Sevenblue 2-tier produce basket, which fits all the criteria to keep your spuds happy and fresher longer.

Sevenblue 2-Tier Potato Storage Basket

Amazon

This 2-tier rust-resistant iron basket has caught the eye of over 4,000 shoppers in the past month alone, who use it not only for potatoes but, at other times, fruit and more vegetables. The two baskets hook together easily in “about 60 seconds,” according to one reviewer, and come with produce liners that fit neatly in each basket. The bottom basket measures 7.8 x 13.8 inches, while the top basket is a shade smaller at 7.4 x 13 inches — both have plenty of room for your spuds. It’s easy to envision storing sweet potatoes in one basket and a mixture of regular potatoes in the other.

The baskets’ wide mesh design lets your potatoes breathe. Two removable hooks come with the set, which I’d recommend using to hang your vegetable brush and vegetable peeler within easy reach. The top basket has wooden handles, so you can move the whole unit to a different kitchen counter to make way for meal prep. It’s available in three colors, including brown and silver, but snag it in black for the best deal.

Shoppers love Amazon’s No. 1 bestselling fruit basket for its stylish appearance, helpful size, and skill at instantly organizing their countertops. “It makes the space look much neater, and I like the design,” wrote one customer. It’s the “perfect height for my countertops and keeps everything looking well-organized,” said a second shopper. “This handy, durable double tray is the perfect solution,” reported another reviewer, who uses it to store loaves of bread and potatoes.

The Sevenblue 2-Tier produce basket will make sure you’re storing sweet potatoes and regular potatoes the right way this fall, winter, and beyond. Snag it on sale for only $14, and you’ll be making all of your favorite sweet potato dishes in no time.
