OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels has achieved Green Key certification for three of its beachfront resorts in Thailand, marking a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability strategy and reinforcing its long-standing commitment to responsible, conscientious hospitality.

Operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Green Key is a globally recognised standard for sustainable hospitality excellence. Hotels and resorts are evaluated in a rigorous third-party audit which measures operational performance in a wide range of areas, including energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management and community impact.

The three OUTRIGGER resorts to have gained Green Key certification are:

  • OUTRIGGER Surin Beach Resort
  • OUTRIGGER Khao Lak Beach Resort
  • OUTRIGGER Koh Samui Beach Resort

At OUTRIGGER, we understand that we are the guardians of our destinations and have a duty to nurture them for future generations. Everywhere we operate, we strive to minimise our footprint on the Earth while also working side-by-side with local people to have a positive influence on the community. Green Key certification at these three resorts in Thailand is an important milestone and a clear sign that our strategy is succeeding. ,” said Damian Clowes, Regional Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Outrigger Hospitality Group.

Sustainability is woven into every aspect of OUTRIGGER’s operations. Launched in 2014, OUTRIGGER Zone is a global environmental platform that encompasses the preservation of nature, resource efficiency, waste reduction and responsible sourcing everywhere it operates. A beach resort specialist, Outrigger is also committed to protecting the ecological health of its coastlines through beach cleaning, coral reef restoration, mangrove planting and local collaborations. As the planet marks World Ocean Month this June, the company will continue to prioritize marine conservation and invest in state-of-the-art solutions to drive efficiencies and create long-term benefits to its destinations.

In Thailand, OUTRIGGER has initiated a series of programs and projects that have enhanced its connection with the Earth, brought guests closer to the community, and helped these three properties to attain Green Key certification. Following the success of OUTRIGGER Surin Beach Resort, OUTRIGGER Khao Lak Beach Resort and OUTRIGGER Koh Samui Beach Resort, OUTRIGGER Phi Phi Island Resort is also preparing for its certification process and expects to be certified in future.

OUTRIGGER Surin Beach Resort is an intimate boutique retreat which overlooks the Andaman Sea on Phuket’s stunning sunset coast. In line with the OUTRIGGER Zone ethos, the resort uses chemical-free cleaning products, low-energy lighting, and water-saving showers, toilets and taps – without compromising the guest experience. Diners can savour eco-labelled ingredients at its restaurants, enjoy in-room amenities made using recycled materials, and unwind on a soft sandy beach which is kept pristine.

OUTRIGGER Khao Lak Beach Resort, the blissful beachfront retreat with extensive facilities for all ages, is also a haven for sea turtle conservation. The resort’s team has helped local organisations to construct a protective enclosure where the turtles’ eggs can hatch without risk of predation. Associates and guests then took part in a major sea turtle releasing initiative. Mangrove reforestation and beach cleaning campaigns have also helped to reinforce Khao Lak’s vibrant coastal ecosystem.

OUTRIGGER Koh Samui Beach Resort, which is nestled on the shores of Lamai Beach, is a passionate supporter of marine conservation. For the last four years, it has partnered with Baan Tai Crab Bank to nurture and release baby crabs into the ocean, while another project has planted 15 rai (2.4 hectares) of seagrass. The Coral Kids Club teaches children about the importance of recycling in fun, interactive ways, and the entire resort is surrounded with native plants, which have been labelled to let guests learn about the island’s flora.
