Out Of Order Casanova 38 MOP Automatic Collection

It was a couple of years ago at the annual WatchPro event in London when I first met the folks from Out of Order. The upstart Italian brand was showcasing fun, affordable, cocktail-inspired GMT watches. Since then, the company has expanded its lineup to include pieces with automatic and quartz movements. Today, though, we take a look at the first automatic version of a watch that has proven quite popular for Out of Order. Three new Casanova 38 MOP Automatic models are here, and all are inspired by Venice.

Out of Order has been making watches since 2013, but the brand’s international exposure has increased dramatically over the past several years. Presence at events outside of Italy has helped the company increase its following. For example, the marque’s Instagram account has become a popular hangout for fans who enjoy watching the spirited and fun videos. Now, the next set of releases is here, and they stray from the prior formula. The Casanova 38 MOP Automatic has a new case and movement.

The new Casanova 38 MOP Automatic collection

To date, the Casanova collection has been offered exclusively with Swiss quartz movements. A big change happens today with the announcement of three new models. The pieces are crafted from 316L stainless steel and feature either a combo of brushed and polished finishes for the brown- and blue-dial variants or the brand’s distinctive aged finish for the ivory-dial model. The latter is a calling card for Out of Order and gives the watches a worn look. Regarding the dimensions, the pieces should fit a wide range of wrists thanks to their 38mm diameter and 46mm lug-to-lug. The watches also maintain a relatively slim 12.25mm thickness, including the sapphire crystal on top and an all-steel screw-in case back.

Other details abound on the watches, such as the inclusion of a three-row stainless steel bracelet with a toolless micro-adjustable clasp. The pieces also have screw-down crowns, which support the 100m water resistance rating.

Three distinct models with mother-of-pearl dials

Three options are available in the initial release of automatic Casanovas. All have mother-of-pearl dials with applied mother-of-pearl indexes and a white-on-black date indicator at 3 o’clock. I don’t recall having ever seen a dial quite like these. There’s a Giudecca Blue model, the Rialto Ember, and a San Marco Ivory. Each takes its inspiration from famous views in Venice. To complement the dial, each watch’s unidirectional bezel has a matching hand-brushed aluminum 60-minute insert with luminous numerals.

To ensure legibility, the slightly darker indexes are framed with a border of Super-LumiNova. Similarly, the hands are also filled with Super-LumiNova C3. As a special touch, note the “OOO” logo as a counterweight on the second hand. Returning to the hands, I’m a fan of the design, especially the hour hand with its different shape. It’s not easy to create bespoke design elements on a dive watch, but these watches have the right level of individuality.

A regulated NH35 inside the Casanova 38

For the first automatic Casanova watches, Out of Order chose a well-known caliber. The Seiko NH35 offers a nice blend of affordability and reliability. In this application, it comes with the added benefit of regulation. This results in an accuracy commitment of ±8 seconds per day, which is admirable. Otherwise, the specifications are as expected, with a 21,600vph frequency and a 41-hour power reserve.

Attractively affordable

The new automatic Casanova 38 MOP Automatic models are priced at €600 / US$715 and are available on the brand’s website or at authorized retailers. I think that’s a very fair and approachable price for a diver that offers different, more upscale vibes than a typical tool watch. Plus, they possess the specs and looks to accompany wearers in any environment. Finally, while we may allude to this at times with other watches, Out of Order has truly managed to create a set of water-capable timepieces that should appeal to both men and women. That’s no mean feat, and it certainly warrants a closer look.
