Farer 35mm Cushion Case Models

Over time, the English brand Farer has developed a collection with a very distinct style. The brand is now introducing 35mm watches in the Farer Cushion Case collection. These are a smidgen smaller than the 38.5mm version Farer introduced in 2022, and they feature some interesting dials. Adventurous even, because the pink Furneaux is named after Captain Tobias Furneaux, an 18th-century navigator and Royal Navy officer. The teal Belzoni is named after Sarah Belzoni, an English traveler and writer who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Yes, these watches are meant for all kinds of adventurous people.

The new 35mm watches in the Farer Cushion Case collection are indeed based on the 38.5mm models. But Farer didn’t just shrink the existing watches. Instead, the brand reinterpreted the organic curves, giving the 35mm model more dramatic angles and a steeper bezel slope. The result is a compact watch that offers excellent wrist presence (that’s what cushion-shaped watches all have in common), while the vibrant pink of the Furneaux and cool tones of the teal Belzoni dial capture attention with their original hues and distinctive patterns.

Introducing 35mm watches in the Farer Cushion Case collection

Both watches feature dials carefully crafted using the same manufacturing process first introduced last year in Farer’s Three Hand Series I. This process begins by pressing the dial with each model’s unique texture. The dial is then spun while multiple layers of paint are applied. Centrifugal force pushes the paint toward the outer edges, creating a color gradient. Finally, a clear lacquer is applied and polished to a glossy finish.

The textured pink and teal dials have a brilliant shine and feature polished numerals and baton indexes. Also very shiny are the mirror-polished alpha-shaped hour and minute hands and the slim seconds hand with a painted Farer “A” on its tip.

Furneaux pink

The Furneaux is the raspberry-pink version showing polished silver indexes gently sloping inward. Applied numerals mark the 12, 3, 6, and 9 positions. A nice touch is the seconds hand tipped with a pink Farer “A” logo. As mentioned, this watch’s namesake is Captain Tobias Furneaux. Born in 1735, he was a navigator and Royal Navy officer who accompanied Captain James Cook on his second voyage to circumnavigate the globe. During the expedition, he explored Tasmania and produced the earliest British chart of the island. Furneaux later returned home, accompanied by Omai of Ulaietea, the first South Sea Islander to travel to Great Britain. The Furneaux scorpionfish, Scorpaenopsis furneauxi, is also named in his honor.

Belzoni teal

The Belzoni variant has a teal dial with a radial bark-like texture. This time, the Farer “A” on the tip of the seconds hand is executed in matching teal, just like numerals marking five-minute increments along the white minute track. Farer named the Belzoni after Sarah Belzoni, an English traveler and writer. Born Sarah Banne in Bristol in 1783, she married Giovanni Belzoni and traveled with him to Egypt in 1815. At the time, egyptology was flourishing, and the couple participated in the exploration and excavation of several historic sites. During this period, Sarah Belzoni also wrote about the lives of Egyptian women, producing one of the first works on the subject. Her writing provides valuable insight into the social structure of 19th-century Egyptian culture.

The movement within

Inside the 35mm cushion-shaped case, which has a 10mm profile and 38mm lug-to-lug, beats the hand-wound Sellita SW210-1 movement. This 18-jewel Swiss caliber offers a 45-hour power reserve and a 4Hz beat rate. Through the case back’s sapphire exhibition window, you can look at the Elaboré-grade movement. It displays customized bridge engraving, perlage decoration, and blued screws.

The new 35mm Farer Cushion Case models cost £1,045 / US$1,165 / €1,195 each and have a lot to offer. They have dials with interesting colors and textures, and the Sellita movement brings a bit of visual entertainment and refinement. To me, though, the most appealing feature is the case. A cushion case is both robust and elegant. Farer created one with “bat-ear” lugs, a sloping bezel, and a classic polished finish that reflects plenty of light. A nice touch and smart detail is the scalloping between the lugs, allowing the strap to sit snugly against the case and appear seamlessly integrated.
