Panerai excels at advancing watchmaking through bold material innovation. Its latest breakthrough introduces the world’s first watch case machined from hafnium. The metal appears here in a 47mm Submersible case. Hafnium ranks among the rarest industrial metals on Earth. Global output measures only a few dozen tons annually. The element exists solely within zirconium ores and is notoriously difficult to separate. Panerai names its proprietary alloy Afniotech (afnio means “hafnium” in Italian), with hafnium comprising 95% of the case. Extraction alone poses a challenge for modern metallurgy due to its chemical composition, which is similar to that of zirconium. Machining hafnium into a finely finished Swiss case demands even greater precision. That complexity limits production to just 35 examples. Each watch also includes a three‑day Navy SEALs training experience in Florida.
The Submersible Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience PAM01089 may be Panerai’s most ambitious watch yet. Hafnium typically appears in nuclear reactor control rods and aerospace components. The metal withstands extreme heat and resists corrosion exceptionally well, rivaling titanium. Density presents a greater challenge. Though its hardness is comparable to stainless steel, hafnium weighs roughly 70% more, making this watch weigh 200 grams. That mass and heat resistance significantly complicates machining. Panerai relies on specialized tools and constant monitoring to maintain tolerances. Performance demands raise the bar further, as Panerai rates this Submersible water resistant to 1,000 meters. Each case also undergoes testing to 25% beyond that stated depth.
Panerai Submersible Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience PAM01089
There’s no getting around it: this Panerai is big. With a 47mm diameter and 18.5mm thickness, it delivers serious wrist presence. That scale reinforces its professional, purpose‑built character, as Panerai’s Navy SEALs models adopt a distinctly tactical design language. This watch features a rifle‑scope‑style subsidiary seconds display at 9 o’clock, a date window at 3, and semi-skeletonized sword hands. Alternating applied dot and baton indexes provide strong legibility with Super‑LumiNova X2 infill. The Submersible also offers dual‑time, or BiTempo, functionality via a yellow‑tipped central 12-hour GMT hand. Panerai omits a dedicated 24‑hour indicator, limiting precise AM/PM tracking. Still, the outer flange includes a full minute track, which is more than can be said for some pared‑back Luminor and Radiomir models. The unidirectional bezel also features raised five‑minute markers.
A broad Super‑LumiNova X2 triangle marks 60 minutes for dive orientation. Panerai differentiates the lume by using blue on the pip and the minute hand, while the indexes and remaining hands glow green. Squared knurling around the bezel ensures a reliable grip, with a sandblasted finish that continues across the entire case. Afniotech emits a silvery‑blue tone that separates it from steel or titanium. The dial mirrors that character with a grainy gradient texture, fading from black to light gray in the center. Panerai’s crown‑protecting system proves essential here, maintaining a secure seal at extreme depths. The “1000m” engraving on the Afniotech lever reinforces that rating. Power comes from the automatic P.9010/GMT caliber, delivering a 72‑hour power reserve from twin barrels. However, the movement is appropriately shielded with a titanium screwed-in case back with the Navy SEALs logo engraving.
Navy SEALs experience
Given the rarity of hafnium, Panerai pairs the watch with one of its signature experiences. Following the relaxed Ligurian cruise of the previous Viaggio Nel Tempo tour, Panerai returns to full military intensity. The Afniotech Experience delivers three days of demanding training led by the U.S. Navy SEALs. In March 2027, the owners of this new watch will travel to Florida for challenges that emphasize endurance and teamwork. The experience pushes both participants and their watches under real‑world stress. Panerai will launch the Submersible Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience PAM01089 in July 2026.
The watch comes on a wide 26mm rubber strap with flexible ends and a taper to 22mm towards the sandblasted titanium pin buckle. This Panerai also comes with an additional anthracite canvas strap for more casual locales.
The brand limits production to 35 pieces, each priced at €90,000 / US$99,500 / £65,500. For more information, visit Panerai’s website.
