American Airlines Group Inc. has issued a direct response to recent speculation about potential consolidation in the U.S. airline industry, stating it is not pursuing a merger with United Airlines.
In a statement released today, the company said it is “not engaged with or interested in any discussions” regarding a combination with United, addressing growing industry chatter about potential large-scale airline mergers.
The company also pointed to its alignment with federal leadership, noting appreciation for “the leadership and strong support” of President Trump and Secretary of Transportation Duffy.
Positioning Against A United Combination
American Airlines went beyond a simple denial, outlining its position that a merger with United would be counterproductive.
The company said such a combination would be “negative for competition and for consumers,” and inconsistent with its understanding of the Administration’s approach to the airline industry and antitrust principles.
That language sets a clear boundary. Rather than leaving open the possibility of future discussions, American framed the idea as misaligned with both market competition and consumer outcomes.
A merger between two of the largest U.S. carriers would significantly reshape the competitive landscape, with potential implications for pricing, route networks, and overall market structure.
A Focus On Strategy Over Consolidation
American emphasized that its priority remains internal execution and long-term positioning.
“Our focus will remain on executing on our strategic objectives and positioning American to win for the long term,” the company said.
