How to Drive in St Barts: First-Timer’s Guide

Your Essential Guide to Driving in Saint-Barthélemy

Driving in St Barts is an adventure in itself. The island’s roads are unlike anything most visitors have experienced – steep hills, tight hairpin turns, and breathtaking ocean views around every corner. But don’t let that intimidate you. With the right preparation and vehicle, driving in St Barts is safe, manageable, and incredibly rewarding.

Rules of the Road

  • Drive on the right – French driving rules
  • Speed limit – 30 km/h in towns, 50 km/h on main roads
  • Seatbelts – Mandatory for all passengers
  • Alcohol limit – 0.5 g/L blood alcohol
  • Right of way – Priority to the right at unsigned intersections

What Makes St Barts Roads Unique

The Hills

St Barts is volcanic with dramatic elevation changes up to 286 meters. Some hills require first gear. The road from Gustavia to Lurin and the climb to Colombier are particularly challenging.

Tip: Rent a Jeep Wrangler or Suzuki Jimny for effortless hill climbing.

Hairpin Turns

Always honk your horn before blind corners – it’s what locals do and prevents head-on surprises.

Narrow Roads

Most roads are single-lane or barely two lanes. The driver going uphill generally has priority.

Key Routes

Saint-Jean to Gustavia (10 min)

The main road connecting airport to capital. Well-maintained with one significant hill.

Gustavia to Shell Beach (5 min)

Short, easy drive along the harbor. Arrive early for parking.

To Saline Beach (15 min)

Through Grand Cul-de-Sac. Last stretch is dirt road. 4×4 recommended for comfort.

To Colombier (20 min)

Drive to trailhead then hike 20-30 min to the beach. 4×4 strongly recommended – road is steep and partly unpaved.
