A Spring Grand Tour – Windup Watch Shop

Throughout history, Venice has captured the imagination of countless travelers who have looked upon its network of canals, its seemingly floating palaces, and its gliding gondolas and seen what can only be described as magic. It is, in many ways, an impossible city, to paraphrase Russian author Alexander Herzen, And because of this impossibility – or, perhaps, in spite of it – Venice stands almost defiantly against the rising waterline, perhaps proof that the grit in the oyster does often become the pearl.

For those who have yet to visit La Serenissima, there is perhaps no better time than Spring. During this time of year, the days remain temperate (a little chill in the air will be much-welcomed after a day sightseeing on foot), but a light chill at night is the perfect excuse to order a second aperitivo while enjoying your cicchetti, bit-sized snacks served in Venetian bars. Plus, and perhaps the most major draw to visit Venice in the Spring, is tourism hasn’t completely picked up pace into the busy Summer season – and with about 20 million visitors a year, any respite from long lines and crowded piazze is a small blessing.

Still, visiting is one thing. Experiencing Venice is another thing entirely. And to do it properly, it all starts with what you pack and who you want to be on vacation. To feel at ease in Venice is to experience it like a local. Of course, Harry’s Bar will undoubtedly be on your list, but that same linen suit worn in the evening can be broken up for a couple days of wear at local, off-the-beaten-path restaurants. And unless you’ve experienced a day of sightseeing on your feet, you may not know the importance of a comfortable shoe – and bonus points if it can double as a dress shoe. And perhaps most important is the right watch, something that looks at home in the morning light on your first vaporetto ride and just as fitting when you glance down at your wrist before your flight out of VCE.

And luckily for you, we’ve put together a packing list to fully experience Venice this Spring.

If you’re going to pack one watch for your trip, make it the Nereide GMT Grand Tour by Venezianico. Coming in at 39mm, the watch itself is a well-proportioned watch for daily wear, while the mixture of stainless steel, rose gold IP treatment, and tungsten bezel keep it a bit more refined for dressing up at dinnertime. Of course, the True GMT function makes it easy to keep track of various time zones when traveling away from home.

Perhaps most impressive with the Nereide GMT Grand Tour is what one can’t see on the wrist, but embodies the spirit of its namesake: the caseback features a scene of a man watching a train pass, surrounded by the names of cities traditionally associated with the Grand Tour, including Venice, Paris, London, Lausanne, Sofia, and Istanbul.

Alex Crane Linen Separates

Almost synonymous with the sprezzatura style of Italian movie stars is the linen suit. Classic, comfortable, and a convenient excuse to not iron, packing a linen suit takes the guesswork out of overpacking for a vacation – especially when you can break up the suit into separates to style throughout the week. Instead of going too traditional with a structured suit, Alex Crane makes linen jackets and pants that pair well together, and without the formality. Their chore coat-style Kite Jacket modernizes the classic linen suit, while the Cham Pants fit more like a jean, for added movement and comfort. Style them together, or recycle throughout the week – either way, you’ll stay comfortable and look every bit La Dolce Vita during your vacation.

Getting into the spirit of the golden age of the Grand Tour, this briefcase has a bit of vintage charm to it, while not leaning too hard into a costume. Handcrafted and made from full-grain leather, the Sullivan briefcase is undoubtedly a handsome carry-on bag. But with an ample interior pocket and reinforced straps, it’s one that can double as a daily tote for the souvenirs you’ll collect, or the days you have to begrudgingly take your laptop to a local cafe to answer a few emails.

For this one, you may have to have a bit of knowledge around cameras (and, for that matter, a mirrorless digital camera lying around collecting dust). But, the resulting images are better than anything an iPhone and a few Instagram filters can replicate. By repurposing old disposable camera lenses and fits them to be mounted on a range of modern cameras. In doing so, the resulting images have a desaturated, slightly unfocused look to them, giving the impression of film photos of the past. The novelty of an item is, of course, part of the charm; but carrying a physical camera around (that isn’t a phone) also disconnects one a bit and allows them to live in the moment – even if that moment is as quick as a camera’s flash.
