This Solar-Powered Tiny House Is Less Than $18K

Growing up, I lived a short drive away from some of Colorado’s finest mountain towns. My family and I would spend multiple weeks every year hiking among the Aspen trees, skiing down mountains, and basking in nature. Now that I live in a crowded Los Angeles neighborhood, I often find myself missing the quiet, beauty, and ease of the small towns I grew up visiting. 

With Amazon’s newly dropped tiny house, I imagine it would be ridiculously easy to leave the California smog behind, plant roots in the wild, and exist fully off the grid. The home’s woodsy, cabin vibe; roomy deck; working kitchen; bathroom with sink, shower, and toilet; and huge windows would certainly make the transition easier. But the real icing on the cake is the solar panels on its roof. I love the idea of using Colorado’s 300 days of sun to power my kitchen appliances and charge my cell phone. (Yes, in my version of off-grid living, I still have access to Netflix and an air fryer toaster oven. What can I say? The heart wants what the heart wants.)

Generic’s solar-powered tiny house has wooden accents and a lightly colored exterior that would blend in beautifully with Colorado’s Aspen trees. While the large windows decorating the front of the house lend it a more modern feel, they by no means diminish its cozy energy. And since the interior can be customized to suit my needs — including deciding how many bedrooms I want, the size of the kitchen, and the location of the bathroom — it would be easy to transform this small space into a compact version of my dream home. Plus, it costs under $18,000, which is less than most cars.   

If you’re worried about surviving snowy winters or rainy springs, fear not: The house has a steel frame and sandwich wall panels for insulation and weather resistance. While you might want to procure a space heater for when it gets really cold, you’ll be kept surprisingly warm in this tiny home, which is insulated down to -40°F, according to the brand. 

Personally, I see visions of myself coming back from a long hike with my dog, only to find my husband heating up the outdoor grill for dinner. After eating outside on our large patio table, we would venture inside to warm up and watch Netflix before bed. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?
