Southwest Airlines is expanding its presence in the Caribbean, adding a new nonstop route between Indianapolis and San Juan, Puerto Rico, Caribbean Journal has learned.
The new seasonal service will operate Saturdays from June 4 through Aug. 3, 2026, offering travellers in the Midwest a direct link to the island’s capital. The route adds an estimated 1,575 seats annually to the air-inventory and is projected to generate an economic impact of more than USD 1,124,550.
Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González Colón said the new connection underscores Puerto Rico’s growing competitiveness as a destination. She said “each new route means more visitors, more jobs, and more opportunities for our communities and small tourism businesses.”
Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel noted the appeal of the island to U.S. travelers seeking a summer escape. She said the Island of Enchantment “continues to strengthen its profile as an ideal summer destination for visitors looking to experience spectacular natural and cultural attractions.”
Southwest already operates flights to San Juan from cities including Orlando, Tampa, Baltimore/Washington, Chicago (Midway), Fort Lauderdale, Houston (Hobby) and Dallas (Love Field). Adding Indianapolis extends that network into a new U.S. gateway to the island.
The announcement marks another step in Puerto Rico’s ongoing effort to expand air access and attract new routes from key U.S. markets.
Southwest also said earlier this month it would be expanding its flights between Orlando and Puerto Rico, although it did not clarify the extent of the increase.
