My mom has always been an excellent cook and baker. And while I’ve helped her upgrade her kitchen by giving her some premium nonstick pans and appliances (she especially loved the Our Place Wonder Oven), I haven’t even attempted to address her kitchen tools and utensils drawer. It seemed too daunting, just a bunch of random, years-old pieces rattling around. But after talking to her recently, I learned there’s actually a method to her kitchen’s madness, and that not only does she know exactly what’s going on in those drawers, but she has serious preferences.
When I asked recently about her favorite kitchen tools, she knew the answer immediately. She’s been picking up non-toxic kitchen items in recent years, trying to get rid of utensils and gear that shed microplastics, and she said her favorite is this set of silicone mini-utensils.

At just $16, the pieces clock in at $4 each. It includes a pair of kitchen tongs, a spatula, a spoon, and a cornered spoon, all made of silicone that won’t hurt your cookware. Plus, they’re naturally nonslip, so they’re easy to keep a good grip on. The silicone is safe up to 400°F, meaning you should be able to cook all your favorite stovetop dishes without worrying about the utensils breaking down or shedding toxic chemicals.
“I love the mini tools — they’re perfect for cooking small quantities and for anything where a smaller utensil is more manageable,” my mom explained. “For instance, I use the mini tongs on buffet tables for certain dishes.” She went on to tell me that she bought five more sets of mini tongs, and while this seemed hyperbolic, I thought back to recent brunches and holidays at her house, and did, in fact, remember there being a ton of miniature tongs on the table. “They’re great for salads, smoked salmon, and cold cuts,” she said. “The uses are limitless.”
A baker through and through, my mom said her second favorite piece was the whisk, but also said she loved the small spatulas. “The whisk is great for scrambling eggs, mixing sauces, even for whipping up hot chocolate or stirring warm milk into coffee. And the mini spatulas are great for small pancakes, flipping eggs, and lifting cookies from a hot pan. I could go on and on,” she said.
Take it from my mom — you don’t need a bunch of oversized cooking utensils, and you certainly don’t need toxic ones. When it comes to whisks, spatulas, and spoons, less is definitely more.
