Here’s Why The Owala FreeSip Dominates the Market

The Owala FreeSip water bottle hit shelves back in March 2020, and its popularity has continued to climb, holding its own with Yeti, Stanley, and Hydro Flask. In fact, with more than 40,000 sold in the last month (yes, you read that right), the FreeSip is dominating Amazon’s bestselling list. I am a proud owner of the Owala FreeSip, and for almost three years, this insulated water bottle has gone with me everywhere. I’m not the only one, as several Food & Wine editors own a few of these water bottles, too.

The brand is continually dropping new colors — there are 28 color combinations right now, but I won’t be surprised to see more launched soon. The FreeSip 24-ounce tumbler tends to sell out quickly in some of the more popular colors, so when I see it’s on sale at Amazon in one of my favorite colors, I have to share. Get your fingers moving and put one in your shopping cart before they’re all gone.

What is it about this water bottle that has captured thousands of shoppers’ attention? It’s the clever multi-layered lid design (which captivated our editors, too). The Owala stainless steel water bottle has double insulation that, according to shoppers, stays “cold for 24 hours and sometimes even longer.” There’s a handy carrying loop that also doubles as a lock, which keeps the bottle from leaking. To get hydrated, lift the lock and push the button to pop open the lid. The cool part? As Adam Rothbarth, a Food & Wine writer who tested the 32-ounce FreeSip, notes: This water bottle can be opened with one hand.   

The genius features continue as the lid provides two options for drinking from this versatile water bottle: sip or chug. There’s a built-in (and removable) straw, which we found convenient for sipping during exercise, or, when extra thirsty, you can tilt the bottle to chug from the spout opening. Besides the 24-ounce size, the FreeSip is available in other sizes, including 16-ounce, 32-ounce, and 40-ounce. Like other Owala fans, we also appreciated the extra boot accessory that helps keep this precious water bottle free from scratches or scuffs. It’s important to clean your water bottle after each use, and the Owala makes it easy because it’s dishwasher-safe. I always make sure I put mine on the top rack to be washed.

Another kudos for the brand, they take the time to listen. After many shoppers’ comments and reviews, they added features that some shoppers had asked for in early 2025: a side handle and cup holder compatibility for the larger tumblers.  Katie Brown, a Food & Wine editor, who was already an Owala fan, “adores the upgraded FreeSip 40-ounce tumbler for its handle and the new locking mechanism.” Joe Morales, a senior editor at Food & Wine, owns six Owala water bottles. He admits he’s “stuck on the FreeSip Sway and Tumbler with the handle” and uses them every day at home, in the office, and on road trips. He loves “that they both fit in his cup holder, the locking flip-top, the freesip function, and how easy they are to carry.” While Nicolette Baker, a lifestyle writer, appreciates that the 32-ounce Owala sits securely in the cupholder and no longer rolls around the passenger seat.

The Owala water bottle has raked in over 75,900 five-star ratings from Amazon shoppers, who have deemed this “the most beautiful water bottle in the world.” One reviewer said, “The lid snaps shut securely so I don’t have to worry about any leaks when tossing it in my bag.” “My water intake has absolutely zoomed,” wrote another shopper. “The bottle has every little convenience: a loop to carry it with, a built-in straw, a narrow body that makes grasping easy and non-slip, etc,” they added.

Like other fans, we could go on and on about how much we love the versatility, the convenience, and pure genius of the beloved Owala water bottle.
