Ming Gets Crazy with the 37.05 Lunatic

Late last month, ahead of Geneva Watch Days, Ming debuted the 57.04. It was a big moment for the brand, being not only a very cool release (who doesn’t love a destro monopusher chronograph), but also the first launch in a new generation of Ming watches, complete with a radically new design language. Still, just because the new is here doesn’t mean we’re quite done with the old, and as if to remind us of that, Ming is today announcing a new, slightly more familiar watch: the MING 37.05 Lunatic.

This new watch is somewhat of a farewell from Ming. It’s the third iteration of the 37.05, and the brand promises that it will be the final version of the watch, which was first introduced back in November of 2021 and kicked off the 37-series of watches. Like the first two executions of the 37.05, the MING 37.05 Lunatic is a Moonphase and date watch housed in a stainless steel case. Like its predecessors, the watch measures 38mm across and 11.9mm thick — although 3mm of that height comes from the domed sapphire crystals found on both the front and back of the watch — and is powered by a Sellita for MING 288.M1, a hand-wound time, Moonphase, and date movement based on the Sellita SW288.1.

While I haven’t had the good fortune to see the 37.05 Lunatic in person just yet, I have been lucky enough to encounter its older brothers, and — assuming no radical change unaccounted for by dimensions or specs — can attest that the 37.05 wears as one would expect from a Ming, particularly one with dimensions like those of the 37.05. In my experience, previous 37.05s felt svelte and compact, and, like so many Mings, managed to play the part of a dressy everyday watch to perfection. I’d expect nothing less of this one.

Of course, one thing I can’t speak to from experience is the dial of the Lunatic, which is the biggest differentiator between it and previous releases of the 37.05. Inspired by space travel, Ming has wedded the Moonphase and date with copious amounts of lume (in their hallmark Polar White color), as well as a new visual format for the Moonphase itself. All of this is integrated with a semi-transparent sapphire dial treated through a “metallisation” process, and which shifts — depending on light and angle — from a deep black to a shimmering silver.

It’s important to note that just because this is the swan song for the 37-series Moonphase, it does not mean that this is the “final odyssey” for the 37-series as a whole. Watches like the 37.02 are sticking around, so don’t take this as an urgent call to order your Ming now or forever hold your peace. That said, if what you want is a 37-series Moonphase watch, don’t wait around to order — the 37.05 Lunatic is limited to 100 pieces, and if past LEs are anything to go by, they’ll be sold through before most of us have the chance to blink.

All that said, the MING 37.05 Lunatic is available now through the brand’s website and network of authorized retail partners, and is priced at CHF 5,250. All watches in the limited edition are slated for delivery before the end of November, with deliveries starting immediately. Ming
