As Coffee Prices Rise, Here’s How to Keep Your Beans Fresh Longer

I recently came across an article from CNN about how, due to the tariffs placed on coffee imported from Brazil and beyond, retail coffee prices are climbing. “On a monthly basis, coffee prices rose 4%, the most in 14 years,” the article said. The news made me wonder what someone brewing coffee at home could do to keep supporting domestic roasters while insulating themselves from rising prices. So, I spoke with a few coffee experts about the tariffs.

“Needless to say, when tariffs hit, they really hit, affecting everyone in the industry, not just those who buy directly from Brazil,” said Colby Barr, founder and CEO at Verve Coffee Roasters. He pointed out that while costs will rise, it will also yield opportunities to try new coffee. We are also getting creative and thinking outside the box when it comes to sourcing. We’re exploring new coffee origins, which are just as exciting and delicious,” he said.

Bean Box, which curates my favorite monthly coffee subscription, is seeing “across-the-board increases in wholesale coffee prices” this year, according to co-founder Ryan Fritzky. “We believe this will continue to shift coffee consumption to the home. Consumer demand and the accessibility of all-in-one brewers are on the rise, and so is the demand for better coffee beans for upgraded home setups.”

So, while you may pay more for coffee, one thing you can do to ensure that you’re making the most of your beans and keeping them as fresh as possible is using an airtight coffee canister. Read on for some of our favorites.

Best Coffee Canisters on Amazon

Fellow Atmos Vacuum Coffee Canister

Amazon

The Fellow Atmos is our favorite overall coffee canister, and it’s also one that experts often recommend. (I own this one as well, and I love it.) Its dark exterior blocks light, which can be harmful to coffee, while a vacuum pump pushes out oxygen that would otherwise speed up the beans’ decay and diminish their freshness. The longer beans are exposed to oxygen, the quicker they start to dry out, losing their flavor and aroma. So, if you’re buying beans, keep them fresh for as long as possible by storing them in a vacuum-sealed coffee canister like this one, in a cool, dry place.

AirSpace Planetary Design Coffee Canister

Amazon

This AirSpace canister is another expert favorite that also appears on our list of top canisters. When you twist the lid, a valve releases oxygen, creating an airless vacuum within. It’s the perfect environment to keep your beans fresh for weeks. It’s made from restaurant-grade stainless steel and has a black exterior to block out light.

Veken Coffee Canister

Amazon

This shopper-loved option from Veken doesn’t let air out, but it does have a really strong stainless steel clasp that creates an airtight seal. What’s really cool about this model, though, is that it has a date tracker on top, helping you always remember when your beans were roasted or stored. Plus, it has over 8,300 five-star ratings on Amazon.

Oggi Stainless Steel Coffee Canister

Amazon

This no-frills option includes a tight-fitting lid and boasts a powerful 62-ounce capacity, so you can store a ton of beans, which is especially great if you buy in bulk. The stainless steel construction also makes this really easy to clean, and a clear lid lets you see how much coffee you have left without opening it and exposing your beans to unwanted oxygen.

AirScape Glass Food Storage Canister

Amazon

This option from AirScape has a pretty clever design: A plunger lid pushes down your beans, expelling air and maximizing your space, while a bamboo lid above prevents further air from entering. This canister is made of glass, so you definitely want to keep it away from windows and sources of heat. It looks really cool and can also hold pantry items like tea, flour, seeds, nuts, and more.
